A 25-year outlook for diseases of vision: the need, the solutions and what it takes to develop themFireside chat and Q&AMonday, 23 November 2026 By 2050, myopia is predicted to grow and affect roughly 5 billion people, or about 50% of humanity, and particularly concerning, almost 1 billion people will have high myopia. The increase seems to be driven by a combination of genetics and modern environment/ life style, especially in children, e.g., more intensive near work, also on screens, less time outdoors, urbanization and earlier onset in childhood. The increase is especially dramatic in parts of East and South East Asia, where 80-90% of some groups of young adults are myopic. And with more children becoming myopic, and more people developing high myopia, there are also more people at risk of a permanent retinal/ optic-nerve damage later in life. Professor Botond Roska, IOB Founding Director, Director of Science and Group Leader of the Human Retinal and Central Visual Circuits Group and Professor at the University of Basel and Bence György, Head of Clinical Translation at the IOB, will have a fireside chat, addressing a broad range of questions: Why is myopia advancing, particularly among children, adolescents and young adults? Which preventative measures early in life would limit myopia significantly? What are the long-term complications of myopia, potentially leading to blindness? How will treatments evolve providing solutions once retinal/ optic-nerve damage occurs? Fireside Chat Professor Botond Roska, IOB Founding Director and Director of Science, Professor at the University of Baselhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/botond-roska/ Botond founded the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology (IOB) in 2017 where he is now Director of Science. He is also a Professor at the University of Basel since 2014. In 2005, Botond moved to Switzerland to establish a research group at the Friedrich Miescher Institute of Biomedical Research in Basel. Botond earned his medical degree from Semmelweiss University and studied mathematics at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. Following his medical training in Europe, he completed a Ph.D. in neurobiology at the University of California, Berkeley.   Bence György, Head of Clinical Translation at the IOBhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/bence-gy%C3%B6rgy-04534528/ Bence joined the IOB in 2019 where he is Head of Clinical Translation. He serves as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Basel. Before, he was a Harvard Society Fellow, conducting advanced gene therapy research at the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in the USA. Bence earned his medical degree from the Semmelweis Medical School in Budapest. Following his medical training, he completed his Ph.D. studies in molecular genetics at the same institution.   Programme 18:00 Arrival and networking18:30 Fireside chat and Q&A20:00 Apéro & Networking22:00 Closing Key FactsWhen: Monday, 23 November 2026, 18:00Where: Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology, Klybeckstrasse 141, CH-4057 BaselTickets: CHF 64 for NAA Members (paid-up), CHF 96 all other Alumni non-members and guests45 guests maximum.
