“The danger of losing one’s body is a universal feeling among black people, no matter where they come from” – this is the starting point for IL FAUX, a choreographic interrogation by Calixto Neto. Who owns the black body? What is a target-body? And how can a body that has been dispossessed of itself be given new lease of life? Based in France for the last ten years, the Recife-based dancer and choreographer has been exploring “peripheral” dances to restore visibility to minority bodies and identities. With IL FAUX, he lends a voice to manipulated bodies. Theatre of gesture and sound, magic and ventriloquism come together in this powerful, emancipated solo.
