Description
The impact of the microbiome on (gut) healthPanel discussion and Q&AWednesday, 26 November 2025The trillions of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, archaea) living in our digestive tract, or microbiome, play a central role in gut health. These microbes help break down complex carbohydrates, fibers, and proteins that human enzymes can’t digest on their own. The microbiome also helps train immune cells to distinguish between harmful pathogens and harmless commensal microbes present in food. Additionally, gut microbes influence blood sugar control, fat storage, and appetite regulation. The microbiome also communicates with the brain via the vagus nerve, influencing mood, the stress response, and even conditions like anxiety and depression. Our panel of experts will touch on a broad range of questions, including: What do we know about the microbiome today? How is this knowledge being applied in medicine? What is the impact of food and diet? How does the microbiome change as we age? Why is this important for health? What is the outlook for microbiome science, in terms of R&D and everyday solutions? This will be a thought-provoking discussion for anyone interested in the microbiome and its role in human health.
