Becoming a Black Woman - Cinema

"Becoming a Black Woman" won the Swiss Film Prize on 24 March 2023. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker Rachel M'Bon. In Switzerland, a land of consensus and neutrality, unprecedented voices are being raised by women who are fighting for the recognition of structural racism, deconstructing stereotypes and claiming their dual Swiss and black identity. In this context, Rachel M'Bon, a Swiss-Congolese journalist, begins her own quest for identity. On her way to emancipation, she questions her past, her present and holds up a mirror to her country and her peers. The strength and determination with which Rachel M'Bon confronts her past is the strength of this film, which represents an important step towards opening up a discourse that has been suppressed for too long.  In collaboration with director Juliana Fanjul, Rachel M'Bon interviews her country and paints the portrait of six characters. Each tells the story of their struggle to find themselves and come to terms with their identity in a society that makes them very aware of their “otherness”.
