Jérémie Voirol presents two short ethnographic filmse exploring festive and musical practices in rural indigenous communities, based on his research on the indigenous people of Otavalo, in the Ecuadorian Andes. Pawkar Raymi Peguche Tío (Ecuador), 2020 (CH) – 38 min This ethnographic film attemps to convey the experience of the Pawkar Raymi ("flower festival") as lived by members of an indigenous community in the Ecuadorian Andes (Otavalo region). We follow the festival organizers in an Andean community in Ecuador, where organizational activities are combined with the cultural, sporting, and entertainment dimensions of the event.Original version with French subtitles El Valle Musical. Indigenous Musicians of Otavalo at the Crossroads of Transnational Circulations, 2023 (UK) – 38 min This short film shows the diverse musical practices of the indigenous people of the Otavalo region. It highlights the circulation of people, sounds, ideas, and objects, and explores how these flows shape contemporary practices among Otavalo’s indigenous musicians. The film addresses fundamental aspects of their daily lives, such as migration, urbanisation, the influence and reappropriation of global ideas and objects, and the revaluation and representation of a local “culture”.Original version with English subtitles Jérémie Voirol has a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Lausanne and has been a researcher at the Department of Social Anthropology at the Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology, University of Manchester, since 2017. His research focuses mainly on contemporary celebrations and musical practices among indigenous people in the Ecuadorian Andes, on young people and music in urban contexts, as well as return migration and concepts of the "good life."
