What movements are shaping contemporary ceramics today? What energy is suddenly seizing artists to explore working with clay, allowing this incredible medium to transcend its traditional categorization as decorative art and and finally elevate it to the forefront of contemporary art? Jean-Marc Dimanche, along with Florence Guillier-Bernard, founded Maison Parisienne in 2008, a gallery dedicated to French craftsmanship, after creating and directing the design agency V.I.T.R.I.O.L. for 20 years. In early 2016, he was appointed as advisor to H.R.H. the Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, where he worked on the creation of the De Mains De Maîtres biennial, of which he is now the general curator. From 2019 to 2022, Jean-Marc directed ELEVEN STEENS, a private Brussels space dedicated to Art and Matter, and then co-founded Ceramic Brussels with Gilles Parmentier, an art fair dedicated to ceramics whose first edition was launched in January 2024. Will the emergence of this first international contemporary art fair dedicated to ceramics succeed in establishing this art at the heart of a rapidly changing market? After a brief look back at a century of history and upheavals in the medium, Jean-Marc Dimanche will attempt to answer these questions. The conference will be followed by a drink in the foyer. This conference is the second one of the DESIGN SERIES, taking place every month until April. Photo: Julie Calbert
