Rethinking data as an asset. his talk aims to challenge the familiar comparison between data and oil, while exploring what truly makes data unique as an asset. We’ve all heard the phrase “data is an asset” and the frequent assertion that “data is the new oil,” but organizations worldwide still grapple with managing their data effectively. At the same time, the data community often feels misunderstood by the business side. Successful organizations have managed other critical assets—like people, money, and property—for years, so what’s so different about the “data” asset? Is it really distinct from other types of assets, and does managing it require a fundamentally different approach? Is data actually the new oil, or is there a better analogy? In this talk, I’ll explore the idea that information forms the core of every business, providing a unifying language—the lingua franca—on which everything else is built. We’ll also address how current academic teaching and organizational perceptions of data modeling often fail to convey the true value data models can bring to developing and leveraging information architectures. The workshop will cover: 1. Comparing data as an asset to other assets, including oil. 2. Examining and contrasting asset characteristics as they apply to data versus oil. 3.
