“TENEBRIS” Ensemble VEDADO Dagmar SASKOVA mezzosoprano Ronald Martin ALONSO viola da gamba and direction Damien POUVREAU theorbo Paolo ZANZU organ and harpsichord The Leçons de ténèbres by Alexandre de Villeneuve (1677-1730) Published in Paris in 1719 and dedicated to Madame d'Orléans, Abbess of Chelles, the Leçons de ténèbres by Alexandre de Villeneuve for voice and basso continuo is a little-known masterpiece from the French sacred repertoire of the 18th century. The Leçons de ténèbres have never been performed or edited since their advent. The work has recently been spotlighted by the BNF archives and the Center for Baroque Music in Versailles. The Vedado Ensemble honours us with the premiere of this recent discovery with an intriguing, intimate candlelight concert.
