Franz Liszt composed the cycle “Years of Pilgrimage” in a state of intense intellectual, artistic, and romantic fervor. The second year, dedicated to Italy, is inspired by his travels with Marie d’Agoult and pays tribute to Italian art through Raphael, Michelangelo, and Dante.
