Description

Winner of the 2023 Prix des Musiques d’Ici, the Ensemble Châkam—named after an ancient form of Persian poetry—offers a distinctive musical language that weaves together Iranian and Arabic classical repertoires with Baroque influences. Its founder, Sogol Mirzaei (Iran/France), is widely recognized as one of the leading representatives of the râdif, Iran’s classical musical tradition.   Their music unfolds as a refined and demanding dialogue between the târ (lute), qanûn (zither), and viola da gamba. Audiences can expect an immersive musical experience where intense rhythmic passages respond to vibrant melodic lines, under the theme of an Iranian artist’s cultural legacy.   This concert is presented as part of the “Heritage & Exile” series by the Geneva-based organization Initiative pour la Liberté Artistique, which supports censored and persecuted artists through legal assistance for relocation, logistical support, and artistic development. The organization also advocates for artistic freedom at the international level and conducts research on its global state, while actively working to preserve cultural heritage in exile.   This concert with Ensemble Chakâm supports the creation of a fund dedicated to legal services for Iranian artists at risk. Building on ILA’s track record in protecting artists facing censorship and persecution, Heritage & Exile connects music, solidarity, and concrete action.
