Description

Özgür Baba is a musician and singer of traditional Turkish music who plays the cura bağlama, the smallest and one of the oldest instruments in the bağlama family. Drawing inspiration from the verses of great Sufi and mystical poets such as Yunus Emre, Imadaddin Nasimi, Ismail I, and Niyazi Misri, his music transcends centuries, weaving poetry and melody into a shared space where time, memory, and experience merge into a single presence. For Özgür Baba, music is not just a form of artistic expression but a true tool of healing and transmission. His interpretations of Dertli Dolap and Çaytaşı have touched millions of listeners worldwide. Discovered in 2018 through a viral video filmed in a Turkish village, his presence—intimate, raw, and deeply rooted—quickly captivated audiences far beyond his origins. Since then, he has performed across Europe, North Africa, and Asia, notably by invitation from the band Amenra for their 20th anniversary, as well as at festivals such as Grauzone in The Hague. Özgür Baba’s concerts are immersive and meditative experiences—journeys where singing becomes prayer, and ancient verses come alive through the vibrating strings of the cura, guiding the listener through a timeless flow of sound, spirit, and shared humanity.
