A Journey to Armenia: Around the Duduk There are instruments that can be recognized from the very first notes. The duduk is one of them. Its deep, gentle, almost vocal tone has travelled through the centuries, carrying within it the entire memory of a people. In Armenia, it is often said that the duduk sings what words cannot express. As part of its residency at Henosis, the Arev Duduk Ensemble, led by Michèle Lubicz, invites you to immerse yourself in this exceptional musical world. More than just a concert, this day is an invitation to discover an instrument, a culture, and a unique way of conveying emotions. An introduction to discovering the duduk From 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, those who wish to do so will have the opportunity to learn the basics of playing the duduk. This workshop is open both to musicians and to anyone curious to discover this ancestral instrument. You may bring your own duduk or purchase one on site. It is a rare opportunity to approach an instrument whose learning process begins above all… with the breath. Complete instrument available for purchase: CHF 275.-Duduk loan and purchase of a reed (reeds are personal and cannot be shared): CHF 60.- Understanding before listening At 7:30 pm, just before the concert, the musicians will offer an introduction to the duduk in the form of a short lecture. Through demonstrations, stories, and discussion, this meeting will provide keys to better understanding and appreciating the music. It will also be an opportunity to discover the work carried out during the week-long artistic residency at Henosis. The concert: a journey into the heart of Armenian music At 8:30 pm, the Arev Duduk Ensemble will present the result of its residency. Created through Michèle Lubicz’s desire to pass on the art of playing the duduk, the ensemble brings together several of her students around a shared aspiration: to keep Armenian musical heritage alive and share it with others. The programme combines traditional melodies, folk songs, and emblematic pieces, in a repertoire where the simplicity of the melodic lines leaves full space for emotion. Listed as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, the musical tradition of the duduk continues today to move audiences far beyond Armenia. Its sound has accompanied many films — Gladiator, The Passion of the Christ, Avatar, and The Da Vinci Code, among others — but it is in live performance, in all its intimacy, that it fully reveals its richness. On August 29, Henosis invites you to take the time to listen to this exceptional instrument and let yourself be carried away, for one evening, by the breath of Armenia.
