CONFERENCE: NUMBULWAR RECONNECTS - Conferences

In the Numbulwar community in Arnhem Land, northern Australia, the artists of Numbulwar Numburindi Arts centre are leading an essential project: recovering cultural objects lost since the time of the Christian missions, and reviving forgotten craft traditions.  Janette Murrungun and Louise Hamby will outline the importance of reconnecting with ancestral objects held in museum collections. This project combines cultural research, language revival, and traditional fibre art practices - revived with both natural and reclaimed materials like ghost nets - to preserve and strengthen Numbulwar’s unique artistic identity for future generations.  Janette Murrungun's Country is Rocky Point near Numbulwar. She is a Master weaver and a community leader. Her work has been featured in the Melbourne Design Week, in several art galleries including Agency Gallery. She presented her work and community in the National Gallery of Australia and University of Melbourne in 2024.  Louise Hamby is a cultural heritage researcher with a focus on fibre from Arnhem Land and museum collections. She has produced several exhibitions and publications including, Containers of Power: Women with Clever Hands and the seminal exhibition. She is currently on the advisory committee for National First Nations Weaving Symposium to be held in September.    The conference will be followed by a weaving workshop in the afternoon.
