Direct Democracy: A Response to Democratic Challenges in France and Around the World? - Conferences - Maison Rousseau et Littérature

Description

At a time when democracies across the world are facing growing pressures, could direct democracy offer part of the answer? On the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, this timely bilingual event will bring together leading voices from Switzerland, France and the international democracy community to explore the role and future of direct democracy. The discussion will look at the global state of direct democracy, its potential to reshape France’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election, and what Switzerland’s unique democratic experience might offer to the wider world. The event will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the evolving relationship between citizens, institutions and political decision-making. Speakers include Clara Egger, candidate in the 2027 French presidential election; Prof. Magni-Berton, political scientist; Raymond Loretan, President of the Geneva Diplomatic Club; Bruno Kaufmann, Co-President of the Swiss Democracy Foundation; and Christine Lutringer, Executive Director of the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy at the Graduate Institute. The programme will combine short expert perspectives with an interactive discussion and Q&A, offering participants an opportunity to share their views and engage directly with the speakers.
