Description
1st session – Language as raw material Writing is neither an abstract nor a solitary gesture: it is work. Work shaped by economic, social, and political conditions, embedded within a complex ecosystem of practices, relationships, and power structures. This opening evening of the Text Workers series explores language as a raw material, the substance from which multiple activities unfold: writing, translating, editing, proofreading, transmitting, performing, publishing, and reading, activities that are often rendered invisible or taken for granted. Rather than thinking of the book as a finished product, this approach focuses on the work that makes it possible and on the concrete conditions of its creation, circulation, and reading. The collective discussion will aim to develop critical and practical tools to better understand these realities, improve working conditions in text-based professions, and rethink writing itself. This inaugural session will open a shared space for reflection, intended to continue through written contributions designed to further nourish the debate. The evening will bring together Anne Pitteloud, writer and literary journalist; Arthur Billerey, publisher and poet; Michel Vanni, philosopher and lecturer; and Pierre-André Milhit, president of MEEL and poet. The round table will be followed by an apéritif and an exclusive reading by Pauline Desnuelles. Introduction and moderation: Julien Antoine Bovier, president of SEV and poetText creation and reading: Pauline Desnuelles, writer and translator This event is organised in partnership by Fondation Opale and the Société des Écrivain·e·s Valaisan·ne·s (SEV), in collaboration with the Maison des Écrivaines, des Écrivains et des Littératures (MEEL).
