Delicately powerful. Because what could be more delicate than depicting the imprints violence leaves on the bodies and minds of those who endure it? Le Gardien des enfants (The Childminder) hovers weightlessly above water, shrouded in red mist that ebbs and flows with the voice. At first faint, then increasingly resonant, Charles Voyer’s words emerge as the naked body gradually dresses again – like a photograph developing in a darkroom, slowly revealing the unspeakable. It takes the full spectrum of art, brought together by Quebec’s Théâtre indépendant, to capture such an exquisitely sensitive portrayal of intimate chaos.
