From church bells to smartphones, from the crowing of a rooster to the first morning rays of sunlight, we humans are always finding new ways to wake up on time in the morning. During industrialisation, waking up became a political act, shaping a world where hitting the snooze button can now be seen as an act of protest against our hyperproductive capitalist society. For whom, for what, and how do we allow ourselves to be snatched from sleep? In this workshop, guided by sound artist Oliver Steiger, participants will compose personalised wake-up sounds using their own field recordings—an opportunity to give more self-determination to the act of waking up.
