Description
Dhrupad, classical music of North India, is an ancient music that has been transmitted orally from generation to generation for several hundred years. It is a search for sound, a search for resonance in the body and in space. It is a contemplation of the feelings generated by pure and simple notes. Its goal is to achieve union with sound. The voice immerses itself and disappears into the sound of the Tanpura, creating what is called Samvad (harmony/consonance). Dhrupad explores a multitude of Raag. Each Raag conveys a unique feeling, contained in its sequences of notes and in their subtle movements. During these sessions, we will first work on opening the voice, searching for our full voice (where the entire body resonates) through simple exercises that can later be practised by everyone at home. In a second phase, the emphasis will be placed on the search for beauty in simplicity, the search for the essence of the Raag and the creation of its atmosphere out of silence, by cultivating the voice to reach the subtlety of the Swar (fixed notes) and the Shruti (notes in movement). Several Raag will be explored depending on the group, in order to begin trying to understand their subtleties.A traditional composition will also be taught during the workshop in order to approach the rhythmic aspect of Dhrupad music as well, the Taal. The classes will be daily individual ones in the presence of the other participants, following the traditional method (guru shishya parampara), as well as collective ones. Registration for the workshop includes the Indian vocal and instrumental music concert on 7 November.
